The Whitney Museum is one of the most well-known
institutes, which has a comprehensive collection of almost 12,000 art works that
are related to modern art. This includes illuminative paintings, different kinds
of drawings and varieties of prints and photographs. This organization was
established in the year 1931 with an approximate number of almost 700 objects
that were a part of the personal archives of Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney. The
Whitney Museum also includes in its collections a number of modernist works by
well known artists like Stuart Davis, Charles Demuth and Everett Shinn.
The Collections:
One of the traditions of the museum includes a Biennial
exhibition that features some of the upcoming artists of the times, who are
quite young and want a platform to showcase their work. This is one of the ways
in which Whitney Museum has gathered enviable art-work collections of various
artists, who have later gone on to become famous people in the world of art.
This includes names like Donald Judd, Jean Lipman and Dan Flavin and Philip
Guston. This biennial exhibition first began in the year 1932 and is held with
great fanfare till date. Some of the recent additions to the permanent
collection of the museum include art-works by Shahzia Sikander, Matthew Barney
Louise Bourgeois, Zoe Leonard, Mike Kelley and Matthew Ritchie. One of the focus
points in the museum’s history has been to collect works of art that would
emphasize on realism. However, the organization has now moved on to include a
wide range of art collections that gives an overview of 20th century
art movements in America. The museum houses the largest collection of works by
the well known artist Alexander Calder.

School and Educator Programs
These programs make the permanent collections in the museum
to deliver some useful and educative programs that are informative to students,
and help them to get a thorough knowledge of the variety of works of art that
are present in the museum. This helps educators as well as students to have a
comprehensive knowledge and a critical and complete understanding of the
American artists. This helps in developing the critical thinking of the
students, and also involves them in exchange of ideas. The programs are based on
