Black Playwrights on Broadway: Alice Childress, Trouble in Mind

Witness a moving look at racism, identity and ego in the world of theater as an experienced Black stage actress navigates through a major Broadway production. Set in the time of the civil rights and feminist movements, Trouble in Mind opened Off-Broadway in 1955 to critical acclaim. Plans to move the show to Broadway in 1957 never came to fruition.

In-Theater Information

Trouble in Mind is in previews now; it opens November 18 and is set to close January 9, 2022. Performances take place at American Airlines Theatre (227 W. 42nd St.).

About Alice Childress:

Alice Childress (October 12, 1916–August 14, 1994) was a playwright, actress and novelist. Born in Charleston, South Carolina, she is known as the only African American to write and produce plays across four decades.
