Since films were first shown in Bryant Park in 1992, free movie screenings have become a summertime tradition in the City. All kinds of films—Hollywood classics, current blockbusters and indie gems—are screened at outdoor venues throughout the five boroughs, with stunning backdrops like the Manhattan skyline and the Coney Island Cyclone.This season's offerings include recent hits like Wicked, '80s classics The Goonies and Stand By Me, and family-friendly flicks such as Moana 2 and Mufasa: The Lion King. Citywide, April 17–October 24The far-reaching outdoor movie program is a film buff's delight, with dozens of screening options in public green spaces throughout the five boroughs. Citywide, May 16–September 20 Don't let the name of this popular movie series fool you—screenings take place in every manner of outdoor arena throughout NYC, from cemeteries to high schools to factories to, yes, rooftops. Their yearly lineup of over 40 independent films (with a few blockbusters scattered in) is always hotly anticipated. Manhattan, May 30–June 27 Villa Albertine's Films on the Green gives New Yorkers the opportunity to experience a bit of Paris in their own backyard. This year's festival is focused on the glamour of French fashion, with screenings of three films—Coco Before Chanel, The Young Girls of Rochefort and Falbalas—taking place at three parks in Manhattan. The space opens for moviegoers at 5pm and screenings start at 8pm, so show up early to secure your spot. No time to pack a meal? No problem—food and drink curated by Hester Street Fair, as well as beer and wine, is available to purchase. Be sure to bring your coziest picnic blankets to watch films like Stand By Me, Pulp Fiction and The Godfather. McCarren Park, at North 12th Street between Berry Street and Bedford Avenue, Fridays, June 13–June 27Fort Greene Park, at DeKalb Avenue and Washington Park, Thursdays, July 3–August 21Coney Island Beach at West 12th Street, Thursdays, July 17–August 7 Prospect Park, North end of Prospect Park Meadow, use Third Street or Grand Army Plaza entrance, Wednesdays, July 30–August 27Four beloved Brooklyn locations are showing films under the Paramount+ Movie Nights umbrella this summer: McCarren Park, Prospect Park, Fort Greene Park and Coney Island Beach. The first film in this series will be Shutter Island on June 13 at McCarren Park in Williamsburg, and the very last will be Miss Congeniality in Prospect Park on August 27. Soak up summer at the Coney Island series taking place right on the beach, which also comes with a free popcorn and drink if you RSVP to any of the films in its lineup: Better Man, Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie and Ferris Bueller's Day Off. Other highlights in this Brooklyn movie nights series include Gladiator II, Call Me By Your Name and Clueless at Fort Greene Park. North Oculus Plaza, Fulton Street between Church and Greenwich Streets, Manhattan, June 13–September 27 Enjoy the beauty of downtown's World Trade Center Oculus Plaza with this film series taking place on select Friday nights and Saturday afternoons. The family-friendly flicks include The Birdcage, A League of Their Own, Space Jam and Harry Potter & The Sorcerer's Stone. Friday screenings are at 7pm; Saturdays are at 2pm. Seating opens an hour beforehand, and limited seating is provided on a first-come, first-served basis—so it may be best to just bring your own chair and blanket to be safe. Each screening includes a surprise activation, photo booth or giveaway.Randall's Island Park's Field 62, Manhattan, June 29 and August 9 This scenic island situated between Manhattan, Queens and the Bronx hosts films on the lawn overlooking the Triborough Bridge. If you're coming from Queens, make an adventure out of it and walk across the bridge's pedestrian overpass into Randall's Island (you can also cross from a park in Manhattan at 103rd Street on the Ward's Island Bridge). This year, the park is building on its annual free movies tradition by coupling it with cocktails, small bites, activities and more. Intrepid Museum, Pier 86, West 46th Street and Hudson River Park, Hell's Kitchen, Manhattan, June 27–August 22 The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum provides an atmospheric setting for movies on summer Free Fridays; this season, they're screening three films that explore the mysteries of the ocean to coincide with the museum's Mysteries From the Deep exhibition: The Abyss, Atlantis: The Lost Empire and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest. Brooklyn Bridge Park's Pier 1 Harbor View Lawn, 80 Furman St., Dumbo, Brooklyn, July 10–August 28 This series has one of New York City's most awe-inspiring film viewing backdrops: an evening panorama of the twinkling Lower Manhattan skyline, Governors Island and the Brooklyn Bridge. On eight consecutive Thursdays, cozy up on the Pier 1 Harbor View Lawn for films inspired by this year's "Women in Hollywood" theme, including Alien and Trainwreck, a movie set right here in NYC.Southpoint Park, Roosevelt Island, July 11–August 1Roosevelt Island is an attraction unto itself, so watching a movie on a 40-foot screen on this island oasis is "next level," as the kids would say. On four select evenings this summer, enjoy screenings of Inside Out 2, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, The Wild Robot and Wicked. Hop on the Tram at 59th Street and Second Avenue in Manhattan, and once you depart on Roosevelt Island it's about a 10-minute walk to Southpoint Park. The event starts at 6pm and the movies screen at sunset.
