The perfect place to reel a big one in (or, if you're “seining,” net one), Jamaica Bay has long been a fishing hub for beginners and experts, with ranger programs that cater to all skill levels. You'll find catch-and-release programs for adults and children that cover ethics, safety and waterway ecology and provide necessary equipment on a first-come, first-served basis. Popular spots for angling (or for getting out on the water by boat) include Marine ParkBayswater Park and Canarsie Pier.

All are accessible via public transportation, and there are even bait and tackle shops nearby. For contact information and details about area boat ramps, piers and fishing beaches, visit the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation’s website.
