Brooklyn Army Terminal
Description
This large complex of warehouses, offices, piers, docks and cargo space comprises 95 acres in Sunset Park. Designed by Cass Gilbert, it started out as a military supply base—the largest in the US—up through World War II and is also famous as the place where Elvis Presely shipped out for his tour of duty in the 1950s. The City bought the property from the federal government in 1981 and redeveloped it for commercial use in 1984. Regular ferry service to the terminal began in 2017, and visitors sign up for occasional tours of the cavernous courtyard.
