Hell Gate Bridge

Description

Constructed between 1914 and 1916 and spanning a total length of 16,900 feet, this bridge runs over the East River and sounds a lot more sinister than it is. First dubbed the East River Arch Bridge, and used mostly for the Pennsylvania Railroad and the Long Island Railroad, the Hell Gate was once the longest steel-arch bridge in the world (until it was usurped by the Bayonne Bridge in 1931). It now carries the Amtrak lines and recently got its first major paint job—glistening in a bright reddish hue.
