Durante décadas, Melvin Edwards ha creado una escultura que aborda la identidad y la historia cultural, basada en su creencia en el valor cívico, social y estético del arte público. Esta primera encuesta importante de su obra explora dos motivos, la cadena y la silla mecedora, que llevan simbolismo personal y hacen referencia a la cultura afroamericana. Esto se ve subrayado por la historia del Parque del Ayuntamiento como cementerio africano y el lugar de la primera lectura pública de la Declaración de la Independencia.
