Brooklyn Botanic Garden, in Brooklyn

Brooklyn Botanic Garden

990 Washington Ave.

There are blooms year-round at this sprawling series of gardens, even in winter when snowdrops, crocuses and witch hazel make their presence known. The 52-acre site also includes a Japanese garden, a trellised rose garden and greenhouses that bring a tropical feel no matter when you visit. If you are looking for Eliza’s violets, you may want to head back here in early spring.

The series of jockeys lining the balcony of this landmark Midtown restaurant will get you in the mood for the Ascot Gavotte. The interior is both classic and eclectic thanks to its dark leather booths, wood-paneled walls, Wild West paintings that line some of those walls and blimps and trains that hang from the Bar Room ceiling. One other throwback detail you need to know in advance: this is one of the few restaurants that still requires that gentlemen wear jackets.
