Este cine de siete pantallas, hermano del famoso Angelika Film Center, ha tenido muchas vidas y encarnaciones desde su inauguración en 1926. Primero fue el Teatro de Arte Yiddish (nota la Estrella de David que todavía está presente en la actualidad); luego se convirtió en el Teatro Stuyvesant y luego fue el Teatro Phoenix. En 1992, finalmente fue restaurada y convertida en el Village East Cinema, que hoy muestra todo, desde éxitos de taquilla de gran presupuesto hasta gemas independientes.
