Description

Art duo Abang-guard, which comprises Maureen Catbagan and Jevijoe Vitug, spent a year as an artist in residence at the Queens Museum working on a response to the 1964–65 World’s Fair. The two Filipino American artists met while working at as security guards at Metropolitan Museum of Art in Manhattan. Their art focuses on immigration, labor and visibility, as seen in their exhibit (the title is a Tagalog word for “coming together)”; the duo looks back at the Philippine and New York State pavilions from the fair, riffing on architecture and modernist art. For more about Abang-guard and their work, see our article.
