Another Wonderland: Abram Champanier’s Alice Mural
Jun 6, 2026 - Ongoing
Description
Alice of Wonderland Visiting New York is a New Deal–era mural that was painted on the walls of the children’s ward at Gouverneur Hospital between 1938 and 1940. When the hospital closed, the mural had long been neglected and was in disrepair. Before the hospital was demolished, the panels were salvaged and stored in various locations throughout the city. Now, after decades of painstaking restoration, the Museum of the City of New York presents the completed 16-panel mural, on view as a whole piece for the first time in 50 years. The mural depicts Lewis Carroll’s characters roaming about NYC in the 1930s—from the subway to Central Park to the Brooklyn Bridge—and was meant to uplift children in the hospital at the time.
