Description

The star of this exhibition is Michelangelo Merisi’s Boy with a Basket of Fruit, on loan from Rome’s Galleria Borghese—an important early work from the Italian Baroque painter known simply as Caravaggio (which served as a nod to the artist’s hometown and a way for him to distinguish himself from that other famous artist named Michelangelo). The boy in the painting was a far cry from the idealized figures typically depicted in paintings of the time and had a lasting impact on Roman art. Also included in the exhibition are works that contextualize Caravaggio’s paintings, as well as Gianlorenzo Bernini’s portrait drawing of Scipione Borghese, whose collection forms the basis of the Galleria Borghese.
