This event has already occurred
Description
Each year, dozens of free and ticketed live music performances take place in parks across the boroughs—though SummerStage’s home base is Rumsey Playfield in Central Park. Alfresco hip-hop performances this year include Dead Prez, TH1RT3EN and Large Professor at Herbert Von King Park in Brooklyn on July 16; Grandmaster Flash at Crotona Park in the Bronx on August 4; old-school rap DJs Stretch Armstrong, Clark Kent, Rich Medina and Tony Touch spinning at Rumsey Playfield in Manhattan on August 5; a massive hip-hop celebration curated by rapper Special Ed at Brooklyn’s Coney Island Amphitheater on August 6; a brunch hip-hop and R&B dance party celebrating the Black diaspora on August 20 at Rumsey Playfield; and the Native Tongues collective celebrating the 50th anniversary of hip-hop on August 20 at Marcus Garvey Park in Manhattan. The new documentary Mixtape, which explores the mixtape’s use in hip-hop culture, will screen at Marcus Garvey Park on August 19 and will include live DJ sets.
