Description

Thomas W. Commeraw was an African American potter who was misidentified by museums and historians as a white man. In fact, the formerly enslaved Commeraw operated a pottery near Corlears Hook (part of today’s Lower East Side). This exhibit, the largest of his work to date, features 40 pieces created by Commeraw and his competitors between 1790 and 1819 along with primary documents that allowed researchers to piece out the story of his life and career.
