Creatures of Myth and Imagination: Europe and the Americas
May 18, 2026 - Oct 18, 2026
Description
Mythical creatures have long been a part of storytelling in cultures all over the world. These fantastical entities rooted in folklore combine features of humans, animals and nature, and they have long helped people make sense of both the known and the unknown. For this exhibition, the Met Cloisters has gathered more than 50 objects in sculpture, textiles and metalwork from Europe and the Americas created between 500 and 1500 CE that depict dragons, unicorns, banshees and sirens. Together, they highlight the shared human exploration of and fascination with the supernatural world—and the qualities that ultimately connect us all.
