A crowd gathers at twilight to pull down a large equestrian statue, using ropes. Men, women, and children watch, while some people struggle on the ground. A building and smoky sky are in the background.

Description

Coinciding with the 250th birthday of our nation, the New York Historical takes a deeper dive into what democracy means by posing questions about what it means, what it looks like and why it matters. Drawn mostly from the institution’s permanent collection, this exhibition of sculpture, paintings and more highlights how democracy has shifted over time while exploring rights such as voting, protesting, worshiping and free speech.
