What began as a typical doctor-patient relationship between Austrian painter Egon Schiele and Vienna-based surgeon and gynecologist Dr. Erwin von Graff evolved into a close friendship and collaboration that would greatly impact the art world. After Schiele painted a portrait of him as a thank-you, the doctor—wowed by Schiele’s talent—allowed him access to patients at the hospital that inspired the artist to create raw and emotional paintings. The centerpiece is a portrait of von Graff by Schiele, along with 40 or so other pieces.
