Description
Fleet Week in NYC returns with a series of events honoring those who serve in the US Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard. First officially held in 1982—though its history dates much farther back—Fleet Week gives the public the opportunity to hobnob with sailors, marines and coastguardsmen while getting a rare glimpse into the latest capabilities of today’s maritime equipment through tours and demonstrations. This year, Fleet Week commemorates the Navy’s 250 years of service with theme of “Honoring the Past, Defending the Future: 250 Years of Sea Service Excellence.” Events throughout the week, many of them free, include:
May 21: Parade of Ships, Hudson River
May 22–23: tours of five US Naval Academy YPs (yard patrol boats) at Pier 86, Intrepid Museum, Manhattan
May 22–26: tours of the USS Oak Hill and USCGC Sturgeon Bay at Homeport Pier, Staten Island
May 23: Top Gun movie night on Intrepid Museum’s Flight Deck
May 23–24: tours of USS New York at Pier 88 South, Manhattan; tours of USCGC Calhoun and HMCS Frédérick Rolette at Pier 90 North, Manhattan
May 24–26: activities and performances at Intrepid Museum’s Pier 86
May 26: Memorial Day ceremony at Intrepid Museum’s Pier 86
