Description

To commemorate America 250, the Greater Astoria Historical Society presents the historic Blackwell Door at Advance Masonic Temple. Believed to date to 1765, the door is 8 feet tall and weighs approximately 400 pounds. It once belonged to the Blackwell family stone house in Ravenswood. During the British occupation of Queens in 1776, British forces carved the “Arrow of Confiscation” into the door to claim the property for the Crown. That mark remains visible today.

In addition to the Blackwell Door, the society is offering a Revolution-themed walking tour of Hallet’s Cove, led by Alan Arichavala; it’s available by reservation only. The tour begins at Socrates Sculpture Park and concludes at the Advance Masonic Temple.
