Events /Jazz, Afro-Caribbean Music, and the Sounds of San Juan Hill
Two men in suits are in a room with a sink. One is standing and playing a drum, smiling. The other is seated, wearing glasses and a beret, holding a pipe, with a hat hanging on the wall. They both appear relaxed and upbeat.

Description

Prior to 1910, the Upper West Side’s San Juan Hill neighborhood (now Lincoln Square) was home to one of the largest Black populations. Here, musical influences across a variety of cultures thrived, and styles like swing and bebop took root before becoming international sensations. Lincoln Center celebrates the cross-cultural musical innovation of San Juan Hill during this time with performances by rising star Andre Perlman and his jazz ensemble and moderated by Loren Schoenberg, Founding Director and Senior Scholar at the National Jazz Museum in Harlem.
