Description
When Herald Loomis and his daughter seek lodging at the boardinghouse Bertha (Taraji P. Henson, making her Broadway debut) and Seth Holly (Cedric the Entertainer) own, his demeanor alarms the other residents. Bertha, along with the boarders, help Loomis release himself from the grip of his trauma after seven years of forced labor and enslavement. Playwright Austin Wilson’s 1986 drama is set in early 20th-century Pittsburgh during the Great Migration, when Black Americans were moving north to form new communities and restart their lives, reckoning with questions of identity and belonging.
