Events /John Proctor Is the Villain
Four teenage girls stand in a classroom, facing each other and shouting with animated expressions. The desks, tennis balls on chair legs, and educational posters set a lively school scene.
Two young women sit on a stage laughing; one, with red hair, lies with her head on the other's lap, while the other, with dark hair, sits upright. Both are casual in jeans and T-shirts, with large Icee cups beside them.
Two performers in flowing white costumes stand under blue stage lighting, dramatically leaning forward and screaming with intense expressions in a classroom set, evoking a sense of tension and emotion.

Description

This thought-provoking new play, written by Kimberly Belflower and directed by Tony winner Danya Taymor (The Outsiders), asks whether AP English’s favorite good guy, The Crucible’s John Proctor, was really the hero we were taught he was. The story parallels the pressures faced by girls in a rural Georgia high school with those endured by the Salem teens. With themes of morality, purity culture and finding your voice, the production—more comedy then drama—asks tough questions.
