A black and white drawing by Keith Haring shows a many-armed, star-patterned figure holding a smaller person above its head. Surrounding figures with raised arms and bold lines express energy and movement.

Description

American artist Keith Haring first emerged in the early 1980s when his pop art could be seen lining the walls of the NYC subways—mostly consisting of chalk drawings that addressed social issues like the AIDS crisis and the drug epidemic. Haring rose from street artist to respected gallery artist—and eventually international fame—shortly thereafter, making him one of the first to bridge these worlds almost seamlessly. The Brant Foundation traces Haring’s journey with this exhibition filled with works from the artist’s early career that helped define downtown NYC in the 1980s.
