Description

Cree contemporary artist Kent Monkman reimagines historic European art through an Indigenous lens—often employing use of his alter ego, “the time-traveling, shapeshifting, gender-fluid Miss Chief.” Now on display in The Frick Collection, Monkman’s take on 17th-century Dutch artist Johannes Vermeer’s painting Officer and Laughing Girl examines colonization and global trade as it relates to works like this. You can also see the original Vermeer work in the collection, allowing a chance to experience the two in conversation with each other.
