7 Train: Minutes to Midtown

This event has already occurred

Description

The first subway line in Queens, called the Corona line when it opened in 1915, sparked a transformation of the borough, and the population there jumped 300 percent between 1910 and 1930. In 2015, when the 7 line expanded to Hudson Yards on the west side of Manhattan, it followed a population and real estate boom. This exhibit covers the line's hundred years of transformation of and impact on the communities along its route and is highlighted by a series of then-and-now photographs from 1916 and 2016.  Also included in the display are a Queensboro Bridge Railway token from 1945 and archival transit maps.

7 Train: Minutes to Midtown is the second of a three-part series that explores transportation's role in New York City's development; From Fulton Ferry: Building Downtown Brooklyn will follow later in 2017 at the Transit Museum's Downtown Brooklyn location.
