Description
Frederick Douglass was an abolitionist, writer and statesman who became one of the most important leaders of the African American civil rights movement of the mid- to late-19th century. In 1869 his lecture “Composite Nation” suggested the United States should embrace diversity and equality for all people. He took his lecture on tour in the hopes that others would embrace this ideology. This New York Historical exhibition explores Douglass’ vision using five key themes in his speech: “Composition Nation” on Tour, Absolute Equality, Composite Nationality, Religious Liberty and Hope.
