Description

Rowe, a self-taught artist from rural Georgia, made work centered on themes of girlhood, play and spirituality—all considered a rare act of self-expression for a Black woman in the Jim Crow South. Rowe returned to art making in her later years, following the death of her second husband and decades as a domestic laborer. More than 100 works are on display.
