Now in its 18th year, MoMA’s Contenders series celebrates films worldwide that are destined to stand the test of time. Each year, the Department of Film within MoMA looks at 12 months of releases to find the most innovative and influential films—those that resonate long past their theatrical release, whether they are likely to become award winners or fan favorites. Many of the screenings are followed by discussions with the filmmakers.
