Events /Thomas Holton: The Lams of Ludlow Street
Three children stand in a small, cluttered room. Two hold toy figures while the third looks ahead. Clothes hang on a rack, and stairs are visible in the background. The atmosphere is casual and lived-in.

Description

New York City–based photographer Thomas Holton visited Chinatown often as a kid, would visit them often (he is half-Chinese). But he noticed that most people viewed it as a touristy spot or a place to simply come for good Chinese food. Through this exhibition, Holton attempts to shine a new light on Chinatown, removing some of the stereotypes associated with the area and showing what daily life there is really like. As such, Holton started photographing a local family, the Lams, in 2003 to paint a picture of Chinese-American life that few people have the opportunity to witness. See the collection of photographs at Baxter St at The Camera Club of New York.
