Le dramaturge montant Keenan Scott II apporte une nouvelle perspective à Broadway avec sa nouvelle pièce, Thoughts of a Colored Man. Installé à Brooklyn aujourd’hui, le spectacle plonge dans les expériences de sept hommes noirs, chacun dans différentes phases de la vie et chacun faisant face à des défis individuels et à des pressions sociétales. Ces scénarios universels quotidiens, à savoir la naissance et la mort d’êtres chers, les complications de la parentalité, les lacunes professionnelles, la gentrification qui change de communauté et l’exploration de l’identité sexuelle, permettent à chacun de voir une partie d’eux-mêmes dans les personnages.

Le casting et l’équipage stellaires (y compris Tristan « Mac » Wilds , Dyllón Burnside et Luke James) font un excellent travail pour engager le public, mais ce qui rend la pièce extraordinaire, c’est la façon dont elle fournit l’un des rares cadres pour que les hommes noirs voient leurs complexités et leurs vulnérabilités normalisées et partagées sur scène. Plutôt que de raconter des histoires typiques du « quoi », cette pièce explore le pourquoi et le comment de l’homme noir d’aujourd’hui sans sensationnel. Pour les hommes noirs et la communauté noire, cette pièce sert de miroir indispensable à l’introspection. Pour tous les autres, il soulève le rideau et laisse de l’espace pour explorer les pensées des hommes noirs de manière nouvelle et significative.
