La seule résidence new-yorkaise que Hendrix pouvait appeler la sienne était un appartement dans l’élégant bâtiment d’avant la Seconde Guerre mondiale situé au 59 W. 12th St. à Greenwich Village. Avant cela, il vivait dans des hôtels de New York, chez des amis et des partenaires commerciaux ou en déplacement. Le guitariste a signé le bail à l’automne 1969, peu après son apparition historique au festival de musique Woodstock.
