Essie Green
Description
Harlem’s Essie Green Galleries shows works from Black Masters of the 19th and 20th centuries such as Romare Bearden, Louis Mailou Jones, Charles Alston, Jacob Lawrence and Edwin Bannister. The gallery originally opened in Park Slope, Brooklyn, in 1979, with Bearden as its mentor, helping the gallery’s owners better understand the history and tradition of Black art in the US. In 1989, Essie Green Galleries moved to its current home in the Sugar Hill section of Harlem, where it continues to show and promote the work of African-American artists.
