Dans les années 80-90, le Festival Wigstock, avec à l'affiche Lady Bunny, RuPaul (et bien d'autres célèbres reines de la nuit), a contribué à faire évoluer cet art en le transformant en une véritable tendance. Depuis 2012, le Bushwig a repoussé les limites des drag queens et des drag kings. Suivant le week-end de la fête du travail, ces performances se déroulent dans un immense entrepôt (situé dans Brooklyn, non loin du Queen avec spectacles de danses et déguisements reflètant la vie nocturne de la ville.
