Ouverte le 17 janvier 1968, la toute première production de ce playhouse d’East Village a été The Indian Wants the Bronx avec un acteur très peu connu appelé Al Pacino. Depuis lors, elle s’est forgé une réputation de champion des travaux expérimentaux, y compris le Blue Man Group de longue date, qui a commencé en 1991. Le théâtre est situé dans la célèbre Colonnade Row sur Lafayette Street.
