The South Bronx is well known as the home of Yankee Stadium—go see a baseball or soccer game there, followed by a debrief at a nearby bar—but it also holds the Grand Concourse, a thoroughfare full of striking art-deco architecture, park spaces, an art museum and great places to stop for a bite to eat.

This Bronx green space holds the Heinrich Heine Fountain, which honors one of the poet’s famous odes, “Die Lorelei,” based on a German mythical figure who was transformed into a siren.

The museums features rotating exhibits that tend to focus on local artists. A current show, Jamel Shabazz’s Eyes on the Street, showcases the Brooklyn-born photographer’s scenes of NYC neighborhoods, including the Concourse area of the Bronx.

Baseball's 27-time champions play at this hallowed venue, which also serves as the home field for soccer's New York City Football Club. Monument Park, behind centerfield, pays homage to Yankee greats such as Babe Ruth and Joe DiMaggio.

The Yankee Tavern

72 East 161 Street

Before or after a game, this venerable hangout—around since 1927—is a great place to have a drink, enjoy a meal and admire the Yankee memorabilia that covers the walls.

A vintage neon sign for "STAN'S" hangs above a graffitied white building with "house that Ruth built" painted on the side. A red and blue "SPORTS" flag is in the foreground, and a blue sky is above.

Stan's Sports Bar

836 River Ave.

A number of convivial sports bars congregate near Yankee Stadium, including the Dugout, Billy's Tavern and Stan's, which is worth your time for its cheerful decor, beer selection and the chance to exchange baseball knowledge with whomever you're standing next to.
