Staten Island MakerSpace

Description

As real estate costs rise and space in New York City —never a particularly abundant resource—shrinks even further, artists have had to find new ways to work over and around a seemingly endlessly expanding cityscape of gleaming skyscrapers and luxury condos. MakerSpace is contributing to the effort for Staten Island's creative community, offering 6,000 square feet of facilities that help turn innovative ideas into tangible works of art in an array of materials. Housing a woodshop, metal shop, sewing studio and computer lab—as well as private and shared studios, conference rooms and a 3-D printer and scanner —the enormous site brings together a diverse community of makers in a place where they have the tools to produce whatever they can dream up. Consider it a safe haven, idea incubator and workshop for local artists and creative thinkers.
