Phyl centers on Phyllis Chester, a young woman who is a governess to two sisters and desperate to break out of her confined life. When her charges provoke her into losing her temper, she wonders if it’s rock bottom or the start of a brave new world. Cicely Hamilton’s 1911 play was set to premiere in 1913 at Oxford, but the performance was forbidden despite being approved by the Lord Chamberlain. The ban became part of its marketing as the production traveled from Brighton to Edinburgh and eventually Chicago in 1914. While the play was never published, Lord Chamberlain’s office kept a copy of every play submitted for approval.
