Butterflies at the Bronx Zoo

Photographs by Brittany Petronella, Text by Christina Parrella 8/27/2019Updated 8/28/2019

Among the 6,000 or so animals that call the Bronx Zoo home are more than a dozen different species of butterflies. Enter the lush, humid Butterfly Garden greenhouse to witness a colorful show, as the flamboyant insects flutter all around you. You’ll also see zoo staff tending to chrysalises (the pupa stage during the transformation from caterpillar to butterfly) behind a big glass window. Click through for a look at the lepidoptera, and then go check them out in person; the exhibition is open from April through October.
