Description

One of the main entrances to Central Park, Grand Army Plaza is located at the park's southeast corner where Fifth Avenue meets 59th Street and serves as both a gathering place for visitors as well as one of the City's most dramatic public spaces. Named in honor of the Grand Army of the Potomac from the Civil War, the plaza was dedicated in 1916 with a gilded gold equestrian statue of Union General William Tecumseh Sherman. The southern half of the plaza fronts the famed Plaza Hotel with a Renaissance-style fountain by sculptor Karl Bitter featuring the goddess Pomona. With these two classical statues framing one of the main gateways to Central Park, Grand Army Plaza is a popular spot for photos.
