High Bridge

Description

New York City’s oldest standing bridge is a sight to behold. The High Bridge was constructed in the mid-19th century and featured a pedestrian walkway, making it a popular destination for weekend strolls, similar to the current-day High Line. Following further growth surrounding the High Bridge (including the construction of the Major Deegan Expressway and Harlem River Drive in the mid-20th century), it became underutilized and suffered neglect. In 2012 a restoration project began to reopen the bridge, which was completed in June 2015. Connecting the neighborhoods of Washington Heights in Manhattan and Highbridge in the Bronx, the bridge welcomes pedestrians and bicyclists to explore and enjoy the iconic borough landmark.
