Macombs Dam Bridge

Bronx, NY, 10451
View Website

Description

Running over the Harlem River, this 2,500-foot-long swing bridge, which was constructed between 1892 and 1895, is named after wealthy developer Alexander Macomb, who asked the City to build a toll bridge at 155th Street in 1814. That bridge did not last, nor did another incarnation built in 1861, but the third time was a charm, and the bridge that stands today (designed by Alfred Pancoast Boller) opened on May 1, 1895, and underwent an impressive, $145 million renovation in 1999.
