This comedy, written by Douglas Lyons and directed by Zhailon Levingston (the youngest Black director in Broadway history), centers on sisters Baneatta and Beverly Jenkins, who must refrain from fighting while handling their father’s affairs after his death. Baneatta’s long-held secret causes chaos at the Jenkins’ family reunion.
How would you describe the process from writing this script to bringing it to life onstage?
Douglas Lyons: Writing in itself can be a very lonely process. You’re stuck in front of a computer, talking and dreaming by yourself. The script can only come to life through beautiful collaboration, and that’s what this entire process has been. Zhailon, our fearless director, had a supreme vision. Coupled with the actors’ magic and our illuminating designer’s work, we made something special.
What do you hope people take away from your play? How do you hope it will make the audience feel?
DL: Joy! I want folks to leave Circle in the Square Theatre feeling hugged by our story. Our preview audiences have been vocal. Chicken & Biscuits was written to send you out lighter than you came. I can see that freedom already happening.
What does it feel like to come to Broadway?
DL: To make my playwrighting Broadway debut with this play, in this moment, is a divine gift. After the last 18 months, I never would’ve dreamed this was possible. But, now that we’re here, I’m owning it.
