O clássico Sondheim faz um retorno triunfante à Broadway, desta vez estrelando o seis vezes vencedor do Tony, Audra McDonald, como Mama Rose. (Entre outros que desempenharam o papel estão Ethel Merman, Tyne Daly, Angela Lansbury, Bernadette Peters, Imelda Staunton e Leslie Uggams, então McDonald está em uma empresa ilustre.) O musical é baseado nas memórias do artista de striptease de meados do século Gypsy Rose Lee e é comumente considerado um dos shows da Broadway mais bem-sucedidos artística e comercialmente de todos os tempos.
