Inaugurada em 17 de janeiro de 1968, a primeira produção desse teatro de East Village foi The Indian Wants the Bronx, estrelando um ator muito pouco conhecido chamado Al Pacino. Desde então, ganhou a reputação de ser um lugar que defende obras experimentais, incluindo o antigo Blue Man Group, que começou lá em 1991. O teatro está localizado na famosa Colonnade Row, na rua Lafayette.
