Marsha P. Johnson State Park

Descrição

Marsha P. Johnson, a transgender woman of color, was an LGBTQ+ civil rights pioneer and key figure in the events surrounding the Stonewall Uprising. The former East River State Park and historic railyard was renamed in Johnson's honor by then-Governor Andrew Cuomo on February 1, 2020, and formally dedicated on August 24, 2020—what would have been Johnson’s 75th birthday. The phrase “Pay it no mind" on the park's gate is what Johnson said when asked about her middle initial. The park is the first New York State Park named in honor of an LGBTQ person.
