Kaia, derived from the Zulu word for “home,” brings South African flavors to a welcoming wine bar atmosphere on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. The menu reflects a globe-trotting spirit in plates of dukkah-spiced chicken, elk carpaccio and mac and cheese with South African beef jerky. Pair such rib-sticking dishes with a glass from the predominantly South African wine list or with a tropical-leaning cocktail like the Pynappel, made with cachaça, muddled limes and pineapple.
