Café al Mercato

Out of Business

Description

Café al Mercato is tucked away at the back of the Arthur Avenue Retail Market, opened by Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia in 1940. Sicilian-style pizza is ready for reheating, and it's excellent: the crust crisp, the mozzarella fresh, the tomato sauce and various toppings of higher quality than what you might expect from such a hole-in-the-wall. The staff also excels at building massive heros, including an off-the-menu double veal Parmesan on garlic bread that regulars request. To drink are sodas, good espresso and cappuccino, but if you've got something stronger in mind it's OK to get an ale from the market's Bronx Beer Hall and bring it back to your table.
