Holtermann's Bakery
Description
New York is flush with bakeries but few have a history like this no-nonsense Staten Island icon, established by German-born Claus Holtermann in 1878. Locals still come here for the fresh loaves and buns but also for the fruit pies, lemon flips, doughnuts (glazed versions only on Sundays), cookies, cupcakes, and popular buttery crumb cake. It’s most famous item? The “Charlotte Russe,” an irresistible yellow cupcake with raspberry jam topped with whipped cream and a cherry—eat it by slowly pushing the base up, a sticky, delicious treat.
