Ess-a-Pickle

Out of Business

Description

Guss' Pickles was a Lower East Side landmark from the early 20th century and partway into the 21st, but times change and rents go up. Owner Pat Fairhurst moved the operation to a heavily Jewish neighborhood in Brooklyn, which makes sense since her pickled products are kosher. The shop looks like a bare office, tacked with newspaper clippings about Guss' history and famed pickles. A series of giant plastic barrels are filled with new pickles, half-sours, full-sours, hot peppers, sauerkraut, horseradish and mushrooms, sold by the pint or quart. Using Guss' traditional recipes, Fairhurst will pickle just about anything she sees in the market.
