More than 80 airlines operate their domestic and international flights out of this busy Queens airport, which was renamed in 1963 after the 35th president of the United States, John F. Kennedy. Opened in the 1940s (it was originally called Idlewild Airport), JFK boasts four runways, eight terminals and more than 150 gates, employing approximately 35,000 people and contributing nearly $30.1 billion dollars in economic activity to New Jersey and New York each year. JFK Airport is located 12 miles outside of Manhattan.
